“The Gibson Malone EP”

The Gibson Malone EP was released on April 19, 2024 on Lacy Records. It features five of Gibson’s best songs recorded with his own trio, and featuring great studio musicians on horns and background vocals. “Nectar” kicks off the album with a blend of Stevie Ray Vaughn’s electric blues guitar and Amy Winehouse/Otis Redding’s soulful vocal/horn lines.

Further tracks delve deeper into Gibson’s eclectic influences: While Down the Drain has seemingly paired the bleak lyrical content of Tom Waits with an Alabama Shakes soul-groove, Rain has the element of surprise in the form of a D’Angelo-inspired funk guitar groove and sultry lyrics, not to mention a feature by Gibson’s contemporary, rapper CHE.

The EP has swagger but ends on a hopeful and meditative note with the soul ballad “Into the Blue.” A wonderful debut from an extremely promising young artist with a lot of soul and grit, and a heart of gold.
