Warren Malone
Originally from Manchester England, his early influences were the classic singers of the 1950s, Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Charlie Rich and Hank Williams. Soul singers Sam Cooke and Van Morrison also played a huge role in his development as did folk musicians Norman Blake and Bill Monroe.
His first American home was San Francisco 1993-1998, where after playing every coffee shop/open mic/street corner, he made an album entitled “Spit ’n’ Kisses” at famed Russian Hill Recording studio which included performances from the Tori Amos and Linda Perry bands. That album led to an extended run of shows at the Fillmore between acts like Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Son Volt and many others.
He has opened for and shared the stage with many folk legends including Bert Jansch, Rosanne Cash, Chip Taylor, Louden Wainwright III and pop stars including David Gray. TriStar Pictures are currently producing a movie “Mobius” based on his love affair with Astrophysicist Janna Levin, directed by Stephen Moyer (True Blood). The film covers Warren’s time as an illegal immigrant in San Francisco and follows him to England and back to the USA.
Currently living in New York, he has released a string of solo albums including “And the Ants Ate The Bee”, “The Great Big Bubblegum Heartbreak” and “Whole Life Blues” which have cemented his place in the New York music scene as as a singer with an unparalleled sound and an enthralling storyteller through song.
“JUNKYARD”, the newest album from Warren Malone on Lacy Records, is a collection of 8 songs, some of which have never been recorded before and some of which are live favorites. Recorded in 1 day at Hive Mind Studios in Brooklyn, NY, the album represents a fresh approach, taking the songs into a studio with a live band and tracking to tape. The album is a clear representation of the sound: no edits and hardly an overdub.
The sound and feel of the music draw heavily on the greatest artists of the 50’s: Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Charlie Rich to name a few. Warren Malone wrote all of the songs except for two, which are covers of traditional blues and gospel. Opting to lead the band with his voice alone, Malone handed guitar duty over to producer Kyle Lacy, who created the arrangements and is helping to release the album on Lacy Records. The 24 minute album is a deeply felt collaboration between Lacy and Malone, with songs that make you want to dance and songs that tug on your heart strings. Warren’s voice shines through on the final lyrics of the album, which simply say “Every day has the chance to be a brand new day.”
